LUE01 - Planted area, what does this section of the BREEAM certification require?

Let's explore in detail the LUE01 - Planted area sub-section, within the Land Use and Ecology section for obtaining the BREEAM certification: from the criteria of the sub-section to the support of our digital platform to meet the requirements.

What are the characteristics of the LUE01 - Planted area sub-section?

LUE01 - Planted area is the first of the 5 sub-sections that make up the environmental category Land Use and Ecology. This sub-section is associated with up to a maximum of 4 credits and falls under the Asset performance assessment.

LUE01 - Planted area identifies existing planted areas and evaluates their potential to support biodiversity. The aim of this sub-section is to quantify and encourage the creation of planted areas within the asset under analysis, in order to support the ecology of the site and the health and well-being of the occupants through increased proximity to green spaces.

The question of this sub-section is “What percentage of the asset's surface is planted?”. Based on the resulting percentage, credits are awarded from 0 up to a maximum of 4.

What are the evaluation criteria of the LUE01 - Planted area sub-section?

The evaluation criteria (assessment criteria) of the LUE01 - Planted area section are as follows:

  • The planted area may contain or be a mix of horizontal and vertical plantings.

  • Vertical habitats or green walls may be:
  1. Self-supporting or part of the building, provided they are located within the asset.
  2. Partially or completely covered with vegetation and, in some cases, with an inorganic growing medium.
  3. Green walls can only be considered if they are "integrated": green walls made up of climbing plants, where the wall merely supports the plants, cannot be considered.
