Overview

The Historical Climate — Soil Moisture (7–28 cm) indicator shows the historical time series of volumetric water content in the soil layer between 7 and 28 cm depth. This layer constitutes the primary root zone for agricultural crops and herbaceous plants, largely determining short-term water availability for vegetation. Less subject to rapid fluctuations from direct evaporation than the surface layer, it nonetheless responds closely to recent rainfall events.

Calculation Methodology

Data from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API (ERA5-Land reanalysis, 1940–present, ~10 km). Variable: soil_moisture_7_to_28cm.
