The MSA Fragmentation component (MSA_F) quantifies the impact of habitat fragmentation on native species abundance for each CLC land cover class. It is one of six sub-components of the composite Mean Species Abundance (MSA) indicator.
MSA_F is derived from the GLOBIO model (PBL Netherlands) and measures how the subdivision of continuous habitats into smaller isolated patches reduces biological diversity. Fragmentation limits species movement, gene flow between populations, resource availability, and the capacity for recolonisation after local extinction events.
Values range from 0.80 (severe fragmentation — highly subdivided habitat) to 1.0 (continuous and connected habitat). The relatively narrow range reflects fragmentation as a moderate but widespread driver, particularly affecting species with large home ranges.

MSA component for habitat fragmentation. The MSA_F value for each CLC class is derived from the GLOBIO model, estimating how habitat subdivision into isolated patches reduces biodiversity. The overall value is the area-weighted average of MSA_F values. Range: 0.80–1.0. Current version: v0.
