A single platform for the environmental monitoring of Marco Polo Airport

Venice Airport sits within an ecosystem unlike any other in the world. Gruppo Save has been monitoring biodiversity, noise and air quality around the airport for years. With XNatura all this data finally lives in a single platform, with a new dedicated interface to read air and noise at a glance.

An airport on the edge of the lagoon

Marco Polo Airport sits between the Venetian lagoon and the Veneto hinterland: protected habitats, wetlands, farmland, migratory routes. Gruppo Save has been monitoring multiple environmental parameters for years — including birdlife, noise and air quality — and with XNatura they finally come together in a single platform, supporting the Masterplan 2021 and an open, transparent dialogue with the territory.

The data was there, but it was scattered: periodic reports, field files, technical archives. There was no single place to see it all together.

The challenge

Making the airport's environmental impact accessible and transparent

Gruppo Save's monitoring effort and the data they collect deserve to be reflected in a useful, immediate visualisation for the end user. The goal was to turn the technical data of the PMA Masterplan 2021 into a digital experience built around an interactive map and a minimalist aesthetic, able to speak to technical staff and the non-specialist public alike.

What we did

Three environmental streams, one platform

XNatura collects and brings together three data streams that today live separately and on the platform become consultable in just a few clicks. For air and noise we designed a dedicated interface, conceived to speak to both technicians and citizens.

How we did it

From field data to dashboard

A path that progressively brings the components of Gruppo Save's environmental monitoring into the platform, starting from avifauna and continuing with a dedicated interface for air and noise.

  1. 01Avifauna goes live on the platformAvifauna monitoring data from recent years uploaded to the platform, with a map of survey stations, search by species and season-to-season comparison. The work is already operational, with planned extension to the other biodiversity components monitored by Save: high-value flora, lagoon ecosystems, amphibians and reptiles in the farmland.
  2. 02A dedicated view, accessible to technicians and citizensDesign and implementation of a dedicated view: KPIs front and centre, charts correlating pollutants and noise with operational flights and weather conditions, legal limits toggled with a click, educational tooltips on every parameter. Work in progress starting from the approved mockups.
  3. 03Time series and automatic correlationsLoading of air and noise time series and regular updates on the platform, with automatic correlation between emissions, air traffic and weather conditions. Phase planned for the release following the dedicated interface.
