Compensation and management: measures designed on data, followed in the field

When a project has to avoid, reduce or offset its effects, we design the measures on the site's data and follow them in the field: hedges and native planting, management plans with indicators, invasive species. Every measure comes with its monitoring.

The rule

Avoid, reduce, offset: the order the EIA Directive sets

Directive 2011/92/EU, as amended in 2014, asks the developer to describe the measures envisaged to avoid, prevent or reduce and, if possible, offset the significant adverse effects of the project, and where appropriate the monitoring arrangements. For invasive alien species of Union concern, Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 asks for eradication within three months of early detection and, where a species is already widely spread, management measures.

  1. 1

    Avoid

Choose where and how to build so that the effect does not happen: the habitats and species to keep out of the footprint come from the survey.

  2. 2

    Reduce

Mitigation on site: hedges and native planting, the timing of the works, management without chemicals.

  3. 3

    Offset

What cannot be avoided or reduced is compensated, with a measure that is followed and measured over the years.

What we do

Every measure starts from the survey and ends in the monitoring

The measures below are ones we have designed and followed for real clients.

Designed and followed

  • Mitigation answering the conditions of an authorisation: in the example report a perimeter hedge of 1,830 plants of 11 native species, three years of aftercare and three of pollinator monitoring
  • Management plans with indicators and targets over five years, as for two outlet villages, for their BREEAM credits
  • Invasive alien species, found with camera traps and surveys, with the share of individuals they account for
  • Scenarios compared before choosing: baseline, plant and regenerative management, on MSA and pollinators
  • Wetlands surveyed, with the conservation strategies for the species that breed there

In part

  • Ecosystem services: measured on a managed forest (see Forests), not yet on every kind of site

Stays with the developer and the authority

  • Which measures are required: it is decided in the authorisation
  • The land of an offset and its long-term obligation
  • Eradication of invasive species of Union concern: ordered by the competent authority

Every measure, measured

A measure without data is a promise

That is why each measure we design comes with its monitoring: the same indicators and the same points as the survey, compared with a control area outside the project, year after year. In the example report the hedge and the aftercare are followed by three years of pollinator monitoring with Spectrum acoustic sensors and butterfly transects.

FAQ

Questions on compensation and management

Do you design offsets?

Yes: we design mitigation and offset measures on the site's data and follow them in the field. The land of an offset and its long-term obligation are the developer's; which measures are required is decided in the authorisation.

How do you deal with invasive species?

We find them with camera traps, sensors and surveys and measure their share. For species of Union concern, Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 asks for eradication within three months of early detection, and management measures where they are already widely spread.

What is a management plan?

A plan of what to do on the site year by year, with indicators and targets, so that you can see whether the habitat is improving. The ones we write are measured on the same data as the survey.
